Cultural

Cultural activities offer students the chance to explore interests outside the standard curriculum and develop new skills. These activities provide a platform for students to engage in diverse fields and broaden their horizons.

At Bishopslea, we believe in nurturing the whole child, and our cultural programme plays a vital role in that mission. Through drama, music, public speaking, art, and other creative outlets, pupils are encouraged to express themselves, appreciate different perspectives, and build confidence. These experiences not only enhance personal development but also strengthen community spirit and cultural awareness across the school.

Music

Music Teacher: Mrs. Precious Bosha

  • All classes from Grades 0 to 7 have two music periods per week taken by our full-time music teacher, where the children are taught basic principles of music and music reading.
  • Attention is given to rhythmic as well as melodic development by means of physical activities such as clapping, marching, games and vocal training.
  • The Early Childhood Development (ECD) class performs a nativity play in the third term and Grades 1 and 2 produce a children’s musical.
  • From Grade 4 onwards pupils learn music theory and how to play recorders.
  • Every child participates in at least one major production per year.
  • Grades 3 to 5 have their production in the middle of the year.  This is always a fun time and parents enthusiastically help with setting the stage and making the costumes.
  • Our Grade 7 classes always have their major production towards the end of the year.
  • All grades from 1 to 7 participate in the yearly Eisteddfod. We always enter five choirs, soloists in vocals, piano, violin, flute, cello and marimba items. This is followed by.  our annual Eisteddfod Concert at the end of the first term, where parents and guests are invited to an evening of song and instrumental music.
  • We have a school orchestra, which participates, in our school concerts.
  • Our yearly Christmas Carol Concert takes place in the last week of the third term.  All children from Grades 3 to 7 take part in this massed choir event.
  • Music is a gift from God!
  • Only the best musical experience is good enough for our children.

Public Speaking

Our public speaking program equips students with the confidence and skills to communicate effectively in front of an audience. Through engaging activities and lessons, students learn speech writing, delivery, and audience engagement. The program emphasizes clear communication, critical thinking, and self-expression. With guidance from experienced instructors, students practice speaking in various formats, including presentations and debates, preparing them for success in both academic and real-world settings.

The Library

Staff: Mrs. Penny Theron

  • The library is open throughout the day from 7:30am – 4.10pm.
  • Each class visits the library once a week to change their books, but they can also come before 8:00am or in the afternoons.
  • Reading is an essential part of education and is encouraged as much as possible.
  • The new library is stocked with a large fiction and non-fiction collection of varied interest to accommodate pupils from Grades 3 to 7.
  • New and recommended reading books are purchased on a regular basis.
  • For pupils interested in chess, boards have been set up to encourage and practice this sport.
  • After prep, many pupils come to spend time in the library to play with jigsaw puzzles, cards, chess, or to read.
